Faculty/Staff discounts for upcoming professional development courses

Extended Studies is offering a discounted course fee of $150 per course to University faculty and staff who register for either of two upcoming professional development courses: Enhancing Your Listening Skills, offered Tuesday, March 4 or Employee Retention Tactics that Work, offered Thursday, March 6. To qualify for the discounted course fee, faculty and staff must register for either class by Thursday, Feb. 28, by phone at (775) 784-4062 or 1-800-233-8928. Enhancing Your Listening Skills

Most people spend half their total communication time listening, but rarely get training in how to make the most of the precious hours they devote to this all-important skill. Participants will learn key listening principles and strategies and how to adapt them to their specific job settings. Key topics include critical listening events on the job; listening for facts, ideas and problems; and helping others listen more effectively.

Employee Retention Tactics that Work

The only thing more difficult than recruiting employee talent is retaining it. In this tight labor market, human resources professionals are in an unenviable position of responsibility for keeping valuable staff from leaving organizations. Employee loyalty is down. Never before has it been so critical to focus on strategies for retaining good employees. Participants will learn about factors related to the high cost of turnover, review key elements in a retention tool kit, learn the importance of conducting retention assessments and examine the role that supervisors play in employee retention.
