University offers summer study tour to Turkey in June 2008
Turkish history, culture, politics and society will be focus of program based at Koç University in Istanbul
Designed to provide a rich historical and cultural experience through intense immersion, a new summer study tour to Turkey hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno’s departments of history, political science and sociology will be based at Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey. The program will be led by professor Berch Berberoğlu, Ph.D., of the University of Nevada, Reno. A pre-trip meeting will be held in April 2008 and participants will convene in Istanbul, June 8-23, 2008. Early registration is required.
Examining the social, political, and economic structure of Turkey and its transformation from Empire to Republic, the interdisciplinary study tour will explore the dynamics of the modernization process in this centrally located country of many contrasts in the heart of the Middle East. The origins and development of Turkish society from the Ottoman conquest of Byzantium in 1453 to the present-day Turkish Republic will be examined. The course, which is offered for undergraduate and graduate credit, will also provide glimpses of life in Turkey, emphasizing the cultural and historical treasures of Istanbul as the focal point.
Dr. Berberoğlu is foundation professor of sociology, chair of the Department of Sociology, and director of graduate studies in sociology at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he has been teaching and conducting research for the past 30 years. He was born in Istanbul and has lectured at a number of universities in Turkey, including Istanbul University, Boğaziçi University, Koç University, Sabanci University, Istanbul Bilgi University, Marmara University, Ankara University, and the Middle East Technical University. He has published more than 25 books and many articles and is editing a book on Turkish politics and society for Istanbul Bilgi University Press, to be published in 2008. Dr. Berberoğlu will lead the lectures, field trips and tours throughout the program.
The tour fee is $2,500, which includes tuition for three undergraduate or graduate credits in history, sociology or political science, university dormitory accommodations in Istanbul and breakfast each day, round-trip airport shuttle service in Istanbul, local transportation and admission to museums and attractions for weekday course field trips, and textbook and course materials. Participants are responsible for airline transportation to and from Istanbul, passport and visa fees, individual sightseeing, incidental and activity expenses, and all meals except breakfasts. Early registration and deposit are required.
Students accepted into the study tour who are admitted to a degree program at any U.S. university and are enrolled in Spring 2008 will pay reduced program fees. Scholarship recipients must take the course for a letter grade.
