Psychology faculty publish self-help book

By: Zanny Marsh

August 8th, 2007

Victoria Follette, psychology department chair, and Jacqueline Pistorello, counseling services clinical psychologist, have written “Finding Life beyond Trauma: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Heal from Post-Traumatic Stress and Trauma-Related Problems.” The self-help workbook provides directed support for readers to accept and and heal chronic pain, sadness, and anxiety that may arise following a traumatic experience.

Steve Hayes, Foundation Professor of Psychology, is the founder of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Hayes’ pioneering methods advocate acknowledging pain rather than avoiding or suppressing it. ACT is not a new science; it is one of a family of therapies that are bringing constructive, spiritual, Eastern-oriented sensibility into Western science.
