IT holds off on Windows Vista; allows Office 2007
Special message from Aron Smetana, director of Campus Computing:
Because of multiple compatibility issues with hardware and campus-specific software, including full testing of the campus anti-virus software, software for Development & Alumni Relations, and several others, the Information Technology Division will not upgrade campus users to the new Windows Vista operating system for at least the next two semesters.
We do not anticipate beginning such upgrades until after the fall 2007 semester at the earliest.
In addition, we are not upgrading any of the central computer labs, smart classrooms, or library computers to Vista this summer or fall.
Office 2007 — However, users may request that IT upgrade their campus-owned computers to Office 2007. Please keep in mind, though, that you may need to save documents to earlier versions (e.g., Word 2003).
Support for Office 2007 is limited, but we do have online training resources available on the IT web site. Formal training will be available in the Fall Semester.
If you use a shared Access database, we recommend that you hold off on upgrading to Office 2007 because of considerable differences and compatibility issues with earlier versions of Access.
By fall semester 2007, we plan to upgrade IT’s central computer labs, smart classrooms, and library computers to Office 2007. In most areas, we will also leave Office 2003 installed as well.
When saving your work in Office 2007, the default file type will be backward compatible with Office 2003 for Windows and Office 2004 for Mac.

Do you know when the Computer Den will have Office 2007 Professional available for the work-at-home agreement for staff?

The media for the Office 2007 Pro work-at-home agreement started shipping today. We should expect to see them in the store by the end of the month (if not sooner).
