The University Police Department was notified at approximately 10:45 p.m. Thursday, April 19 that Michael James Sheriff was apprehended in Carson City. Based on this information, University classes were held as scheduled on Friday, April 20.

Earlier in the evening, the Reno Police Department notified the University Police Department that Sheriff was wanted for a parole and probation violation and had made threatening remarks to his family following the Virginia Tech incident.

Sheriff, a military veteran, has been treated for post traumatic stress disorder and mental illness, and was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon in December 2005. Although there were no direct threats made to the campus, the matter was taken seriously and evening classes were canceled.

Although this incident has been resolved, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious circumstances or activities by calling University Police at (775) 334-COPS, (775) 745-6195 or 911.
