Awareness of complexity and enhanced understanding results when learners discuss the meaning of events with each other. But to be successful, groups need a common experience to draw them into participation, establish a personal connection with the content, and provide a shared referent from which to exemplify their ideas.

The American Society of Newspaper Editors has awarded the Reynolds School of Journalism a $430,000, three-year grant to train high school newspaper advisors. The first institute will be offered July 15-27 at the University.

Signing up for Professional Development & Training classes has become much easier due to a new registration system called Employee/Staff Training and Event Registration (ESTER), faculty and staff can now register online for classes and workshops.

The School of Medicine broke ground March 5 on the first new medical research facility to be built at the University in more than 20 years. The Center for Molecular Medicine will house portions of the medical school’s basic science research departments and serve as the headquarters for the Whittemore Peterson Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease and the northern center for Nevada Cancer Institute.

Thousands of high schools across the country are participating in “Poetry Out Loud,” a recitation competition that encourages high school students to memorize and perform great poems. The University will host the competition, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, March 24, in the Redfield Proscenium Theatre of the Church Fine Arts Complex on the Reno campus.

Shelley Von Berg, Dennis Uken, Thomas Watterson and Stephen McFarlane , faculty within the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, presented a poster, “DECTalk and VeriVox Synthesized Speech Intelligibility: Rate and Preference Differences for Four Listener Groups,” at the annual meeting of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.
