Bylaw vote deadline extended until Feb. 27
Greetings fellow University faculty members,
We have had some feedback about the ongoing vote on a possible change to the University bylaws regarding grievance procedures indicating that there is some confusion. In addition, we have received very few votes to date on this important aspect of the bylaws and the vote is scheduled to terminate tomorrow, Feb. 23.
Therefore, the executive board of the Faculty Senate has decided to extend the vote until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
The bylaws change approved by the Faculty Senate and presented to you for a vote involves the process by which faculty can seek a change in their annual evaluation rating if they think it is unfair.
The senate advocated a change to the Nevada System of Higher Education code, which was adopted by the Board of Regents last December, requiring that evaluation ratings be grievable along with merit decisions at NSHE institutions where annual evaluation and merit are linked.
This specifically targeted the University of Nevada, Reno and rendered our current bylaws inconsistent with the NSHE code, which is a binding part of all University of Nevada, Reno faculty contracts.
The proposed change in our bylaws will bring them back into compliance with the code and re-establish the right of our faculty to grieve annual evaluation ratings when necessary.
For those who would like to read unedited versions of the current bylaws language and proposed bylaws language, visit this Faculty Senate website.
We are asking for an up or down vote on this change to the bylaws. We recommend using the traditional two-envelope method for those who would like to keep their vote confidential. You can download a copy of the ballot page by clicking here.
Alternatively, this may be a vote for which you are not concerned about anonymity, in which case you can simply email your vote to Linda Kuchenbecker lindak@unr.edu in the Faculty Senate office.
Best Wishes,
Guy Hoelzer
Faculty Senate Chair
