Holiday food drive surpasses last year’s collection
Once again, the University showed great success in its annual food drive. The University collected 25.5 barrels, which is five more than last year. The barrels were donated to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN) and Evelyn Mount’s Community Food Drive to be distributed to struggling families in the Reno-Sparks community.
“Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this annual event such a big success once again,” said Debby Carlson of the University’s Career Development office, who coordinated the food drive.
The Food Bank of Northern Nevada estimates that each barrel contains about 200 pounds of food. Doris Phelps, director of marketing and development for FBNN, said that it takes about 1.5 pounds to provide a meal for one person. These figures suggest that donations collected at the University had the potential to provide up to 3,400 meals.
