December 21st, 2006

Shari Roberts, a kindergarten teacher at the University’s Child and Family Research Center, recently received a Teachers Research Grant from the International Reading Association and will be presenting research findings to the group at the IRA annual convention in Toronto, in May of 2007.

The Teachers Researcher Grant was awarded to support her in her research study titled “Parent’s reading interactions with their children at home and the ways those interactions impact their children’s literacy learning.” The study aimed to discover and identify the benefits of literacy education between parents, caregivers and their children at home.

“Parental reading interactions with their children at home can positively impacts a child’s reading abilities,” Roberts said. “Because many parents and caregivers need guidance in how to work on reading skills at home, my research offers helpful advice on what types of interactions assist in developing sound reading skills.”

Roberts holds a master’s degree in literacy studies/reading specialist from the College of Education, Educational Specialties Department. She also obtained her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the College of Education at the University.

Through education, research, and community outreach, the College of Health and Human Sciences is dedicated to the development of tomorrow’s leaders who will help build a healthy Nevada through the prevention and resolution of the issues that challenge people’s everyday lives.
