Facilities’ engineer earns LEED accreditation

Dean Borges sits atop Mt. Tallac, south of Lake Tahoe.
Dean Borges, a mechanical engineer with Facilities Services, earned a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation Nov. 29.
Borges was prompted to pursue the accreditation after working on the Joe Crowley Student Union project.
“The students wanted a lot of innovation and we did great things to incorporate LEED criteria,” he said.
Among the energy- and resource-efficient characteristics of the building are the use of recycled rainwater for irrigation and positioning the building to maximize sunlight.
Borges also said the LEED certification will help with more than new construction.
“Existing buildings have great opportunities,” he said. “We’ve got a good opportunity to improve buildings like Mackay Science.”
Collaborating with groups like SEEDS (Students and Educators for Environmental Development and Sustainability) and the University’s Environmental Health and Safety department, Borges said the University is leading Nevada.
“This campus pretty much sets the standard for the state”
