English professor Cheryll Glotfelty was selected as the 2006 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Nevada Professor of the Year. Glotfelty was recognized at an awards luncheon, Nov. 16 in Washington, DC.
“It is extremely gratifying for the College of Liberal Arts and the English department for Cheryll to be recognized for her academic scholarship and ability to inspire students,” said Heather Hardy, dean. “Cheryll’s work reflects cutting-edge research and artistic expression, which promotes the value of a liberal arts education on a national level.”
Glotfelty contributed to the creation of the nation’s first graduate program of study in literature and environment. “The award focuses on undergraduate teaching,” said Stacy Burton, English chair. “Among Cheryll’s most visible contributions are her extensive teaching in the core curriculum and creation of new capstone courses in her research fields.”
Glotfelty was profiled in summer 2003 issue of Nevada Silver & Blue, the University of Nevada, Reno alumni magazine after receiving the Regents’ Teaching Award. She served from 2000-2002 as the Sanford Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, during which she developed and introduced an undergraduate course on aging and the media. She also received the F. Donald Tibbetts Distinguished Teacher Award in 2000.
Glotfelty’s award is sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. It is the only national awards program that recognizes university and college professors for instruction.
