In March, Jen Huntley-Smith of the Academy for the Environment, and Kate Berry, associate professor of geography, received a research grant from the National Science Foundation for their project “Tracing Tradition and Mapping out Change: Water Allocation, Conflict Management and the Law in Hawai`i, 1858-1906.” The project runs from March 2006-March 2008 and was funded for $138,602.

The Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies within the College of Health and Human Sciences, has recently been awarded a $1 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to develop a neuroscience and biology of drug abuse and addiction (science of addiction) curriculum that can be easily infused into existing introductory undergraduate college courses in addiction counseling, criminal justice, nursing and social work, and to study its impact on students’ knowledge and attitudes.

The Performing Arts Series and Reno Jazz Festival have received the following grants:

  • Performing Arts Series: City of Reno, 06-07 Project Grant, $5,537 Nevada Arts Council, 06-07 Project Grant, $5861.
  • Reno Jazz Festival: City of Reno, 06-07 Project Grant, $5,537 Nevada Arts Council, 06-07 Project Grant, $6,500 (perfect score, maximum funding).

Tom Kozubowski, associate professor of mathematics and statistics, is co-PI on a National Science Foundation grant: Stochastic Modeling of Episode Duration, Magnitude, and Peak in Long Paleo Records (with Franco Biondi, Geography; Anna Panorska , Mathematics and Statistics, and Laurel Saito, Natural Resources and Environmental Science). The total amount is about $240,000 for 2006-2007.

Monica Grecu, English lecturer, received a $2,500 grant from the University’s Board of International Affairs in 2005, for proposing and creating a new International Academic Exchange Agreement between the University and UAD, Cluj, Romania.

Coni Kalinowski, MD, with the Department of Family Medicine, affiliated with Mojave Adult, Child, and Family Services in Las Vegas, was awarded a $35,000 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services Problem Gambling Workforce Development, Prevention, and Evaluation Program to study gambling habits and associated problems in individuals having intellectual disabilities.

Mojave was recently approved as a field trial site for the new Diagnostic Manual for mental disorders in people having intellectual disabilities. Kalinowski will be coordinating Mojave’s contribution to this international project.

Alan E. Fruzzetti, associate professor and director, Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program, Department of Psychology, has received the following grants:

  • Co-Principal Investigator (with Dr. Jacque Pistorello). Dialectical Behavior Therapy Applied to College Students. $450,000 awarded from the National Institute of Mental Health. Began October 2005.
  • Principal Investigator, Treatment for women victims of domestic violence. This is part of the STOP Violence Against Women initiative, awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Susan Donaldson, extension water quality education specialist, received the following grant: $93,365, Donaldson, S. and E. Smith. 2006–2008. Living on the Land Curriculum Expansion and Instructor Trainings, Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, Professional Development Program.
