Have a question about the history of your department or program? Interested in the origin of a campus building or landmark? Like to know the story behind a University tradition? Need to move out infrequently used records taking up valuable office space? The University Archives may be able to help.

Located in the Special Collections Department of Getchell Library, the University Archives is the designated repository for all records with historical research value created by University of Nevada, Reno administrative offices, academic departments and programs, and other University offices and organizations

The archives actively locates and collects those records and makes them available to the University community and general public for reference and research.

Historical records are the unique materials that serve as the institution’s collective memory and tell the University’s story. Any records documenting the function or other substantive activities of a University department or program will be considered for transfer to the archives.

They can consist of correspondence, subject files, meeting minutes, reports, publications, promotional materials, photographs and other materials from any time period, in any format (including electronic), and of any volume, that are no longer required for current use or are referred to on an infrequent basis.

Records do not need to be weeded, organized or rearranged and can be transferred to the archives as kept by the office. Any material placed in the archives will always be available to the depositing office.

The University Archives is here to support the University community. So if you have a question about some aspect of University history or have records in your office that may be suitable for transfer to the archives, please contact Jim Bantin, University Archivist at (775) 784-6500 ext. 336 or jbantin@unr.edu
