September 29th, 2006

Dennis Murphy, research professor in the Department of Biology in the College of Science, was recently named to the National Research Council’s Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology. The National Research Council is the National Academy of Sciences’ principal operating agency, providing services and scientific advice to the U.S. government, the public and the scientific and engineering communities.

Murphy, an award-winning and nationally recognized researcher, will work with the 28-member Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology (BEST) to help provide independent expert assistance to the federal government regarding environmental and ecological problems. Working with study committees composed of experts from academic institutions and other organizations, Murphy will undertake studies in response to requests from federal agencies, from Congress, or from members of the BEST board.

“From Yucca Mountain to endangered species issues, this is a wonderful opportunity to elevate the visibility of Nevada’s issues in the national science agenda,” Murphy said. “I’m greatly honored to be a part of this board.”

Murphy, director of the graduate program in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology, is the author of more than 170 published papers and book chapters on the biology of butterflies and on key issues on the conservation of imperiled species. Murphy, a Pew Scholar in Conservation and Environment, has worked in conflict resolution in land-use planning on private property, and has helped developed habitat conservation plans in the Pacific Northwest, southern California and Nevada.

BEST is the National Academies’ principal study unit for environmental pollution problems affecting human health, human impacts on the environment, and the assessment and management of related risks to human health and the environment. Other members of the BEST board include a professor and chair from the Bloomberg School of Health at Johns Hopkins University, a professor of law from Yale Law School, a director from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., as well as a director from the National Resources Defense Council.
