Substantial performance benefits, more features, and dramatically increased email quotas are coming to the campus when Twilight, the new UNIX-based email server, takes over for Equinox on Oct. 31. Of course, all University faculty and staff also have the option of moving from Equinox to the Exchange email server for even more benefits.

If you are on Equinox and will be affected by the shutdown, you should have received at least one email letting you know your account will be moved and you need to contact the Help Desk or Support Center to facilitate the move.

If you are using Outlook and you can use the Calendar function to set up appointments with others across campus, then you are not on Equinox. If you are not sure, call.

• If you choose Exchange, you get a 250-MB quota, shared calendaring, remote access, easy-to-use server-side rules to greatly reduce spam, the ability to simply connect SmartPhones™, BlackBerry™ devices and other PDAs, plus powerful collaboration features.

• If you choose Twilight, you get a 150-MB quota, remote access to a terminal shell, and the ability to use Pine and Wolfmail.

Both options work with many other email clients, as well, including Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, and Outlook Express. However, many users will prefer Exchange so they can conveniently schedule meetings with colleagues, a great time-saver, especially since approximately two-thirds of the campus already uses Exchange.

To help the campus better understand all the ramifications of this change, the Information Technology Division has put together a Web page of Frequently Asked Questions. IT looks forward to improving the email experience for everyone who works at the University.
