Welcome to Our Workplace!
Welcome to the launch of Our Workplace, the new online newspaper and e-newsletter just for us, the employees of the University of Nevada, Reno. Every other Friday during the academic year we’ll email you lists of articles published by faculty, alerts about events or construction that could affect your parking routing, introductions to new employees, and lots, lots more.
A slate of columnists — you’ll recognize some of the names — will give you the scoop on what’s new or important regarding benefits, employee rights, research and innovation, safety on the job and even fitness tips.
In the Friday email and at the Our Workplace Website — workplace.unr.edu —you’ll also find summaries of meetings of the Staff Employees’ Council, Faculty Senate, the Academic Leadership Council and other campus committees. The idea is for this to be a one-stop info shop.
And up to date. New material will always be accumulating at the website. So you don’t have to wait for the next email. In fact, you don’t even have to go to the website. To get site updates the minute they’re posted, you can subscribe via RSS. Use the RSS link at the right side of the web page.
You also don’t have to just sit there and read it. The website was created with blogging software, so you can share your reactions to what you read via the “comments” button. Or at least you will be able to do that. We’re still developing a blog policy so the comments function is currently turned off.
To get the two-way communication going as soon as possible, however, you can email comments or story ideas to the columnists or me, the editor, at any time. (Here’s my address: mrobbins@unr.edu; the columnists’ will appear in their columns.)
We received an inundation (and we’re talking tsunami) of responses to an earlier solicitation for notices about accomplishments and recent publications. Fear not, we’ll get them all up eventually.
The site also incorporates has a searchable archive, so if you can’t find what you’re looking for in the latest email or on the front page, try the search box. Explore the navigation bar, too. We’ve tried to categorize information to make it easier to find.
We have many to thank for getting this project off the ground, including all the columnists for the generous donation of their time and talent, graphic designer Claudia Ortega-Lukas, who designed the nameplate, as well as the management in the Office of Marketing and Communications for making this happen in the first place.
But most especially we are indebted to David Bobzien, campus webmaster, for working tirelessly not only to install the software and make it work in ways we didn’t think possible, but to design its look, which we think is great!
We hope you enjoy reading Our Workplace — in your workplace (wherever that is in Nevada) or at home. Please let me know what you think of it and give me your suggestions on how to improve it.
Best regards,
Melanie Robbins
