State Sen. Dina Titus (D-Las Vegas) and U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons (R-NV) will engage in the first gubernatorial debate since each candidate won their respective primary elections, 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in Nightingale Hall at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The debate is sponsored by Youth Voice, Inc., a non-profit organization aiming to increase civic participation among youth, in collaboration with the University’s College Republicans and Young Democrats.

“I have been proud these many years of our students’ initiatives in matters of political events,” said Bob Dickens, director of the University’s governmental relations. “This debate indicates that this University’s leadership tradition continues.”

Sandy Rodriguez, director of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada, shared similar praise.

“By pursuing and presenting this debate, the membership of both the College Republicans and the Young Democrats epitomize the engagement and fulfillment of civic responsibility that underscore the University’s commitment to teach student-citizens.”

The debate will be televised live statewide by Sunbelt Communication’s stations KRNV News 4 in Reno, KVBC-TV 3 in Las Vegas and KENV-TV Ch. 12 in Elko. KRNV anchor Joe Hart will serve as the moderator.

After a two-minute opening statement, candidates will answer questions in three 15-minute segments. First, they will answer questions submitted by audience members. Next, the candidates will take questions from campus leaders about issues relevant to university students. In the last segment, the candidates will have the opportunity to pose questions directly to each other. The debate will conclude with two-minute closing statements from each candidate.

Each question will be asked to both candidates. Throughout the debate, candidates will each have a maximum of 90 seconds to answer questions and as well as a 60-second rebuttal opportunity.

Rallies have been planned for each candidate before the debate. The College Republicans plan to assemble on the west side of the Church Fine Arts building on Virginia Street. The Young Democrats plan to gather on the lawn of the Student Services building. Both rallies are set to begin at 5 p.m.

The debate is free and open to the public. Doors to the concert hall will open at 5:15 p.m. and seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis (some seats, however, will be reserved for those participating in the rallies). Once the 600 seats are taken, those wishing to watch the debate will be directed to the Pine Lounge of the Jot Travis Student Union where the debate will be televised on a large projection screen.

Youth Voice, Inc. has requested that those attending the debate refrain from wearing campaign clothing or bringing signs into the hall.
