Advocates and Allies 2006 Film Series

The Advocates and Allies 2006 LGBT Film series begins Oct. 11, and will start with a lecture, “Gender Bending in the Movies,” given by Howard Rosenberg. Each presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. The films begin at 7:00 p.m.

October 11: Lecture: “Gender Bending in the Movies”–Pine Lounge, JTSU

Did you know that drag performances have been prevalent throughout history and across cultures? Join this fascinating discussion on the history, politics, and influence of drag performances, with a focus on film. Rosenberg, noted critic, scholar and professor of art, will examine how gender has been portrayed from real to reel to real. Comic drag, camp drag, and icon drag are just a few of the many worlds that he will explore.

October 18: If These Walls Could Talk 2 and 30 Days—Pine Lounge, JTSU

If These Walls Could Talk 2: Butch-femme relationships, domestic partner rights, and homophobia are just a few of the many topics raised by this unique film that gives the viewer portraits of fascinating women in a series of vignettes. The lives on screen reflect the lives of many lesbians living in the United States. 30 Days: In this episode from the fX network series, a conservative, straight boy from the cornfields of the heartland spends a month living in the Castro, an environment in which his views are challenged. By the end of the month, he has discovered the error of his ways and developed a whole new set of attitudes.

October 25: Dorian Blues—Lounge, JTSU

This hilarious comedy follows the life of Dorian—a young, gay adult struggling to find acceptance and a place where he can feel comfortable being himself. At home, his parents prove to be unsupportive and useless. When he goes away to college at NYU, he hopes his situation will improve; however, he must learn the ropes in an overwhelmingly big city where he still struggles to find happiness. Join Dorian as he stumbles into adulthood—learning many lessons about love, life, and finding happiness.

November 1: Transamerica—College of Education Building, Room 2003

Felicity Huffman delivers a convincing and unforgettable performance as Bree—a transsexual who is about to complete her sex reassignment surgery to become a woman when she discovers that she is a father. When she finally gets the courage to look for and meet her estranged son, she finds a troubled teenager in desperate need of a parental figure. Together they embark on an adventurous road trip across the country—both in search of something they are missing. Laugh and cry as you join them on this fabulous and unpredictable journey.

November 8: Yossi and Jagger—Pine Lounge, JTSU

A dramatic portrayal of a loving relationship between two male soldiers working in a precarious environment. The tensions of their relationship are intertwined with escalating military conflict and with the complications of a young woman’s crush. Yossi, a career soldier, is concerned with keeping their relationship secret, while Jagger, nicknamed for Mick Jagger because of his attractiveness to everyone around him, is not as concerned about concealing their affair. Don’t miss this incredible story of forbidden love in the midst of war.

November 15: Imagine Me and You—Pine Lounge, JTSU

In this farcical romantic comedy two women meet and fall and love, however, they just happen to meet while one is celebrating her wedding—to a man! Laugh and be swept off your feet as you see them falling in love behind the back of the clueless groom. Find out in this hilarious film that is filled with an array of funny and complex characters.
